Lake Constance: Palaces & Panoramic Views

Your journey begins in Lindau, beautifully set on an island in Lake Constance. Today you leave the lakeshore behind and begin your ride towards the rolling foothills of the Alps. The route leads through fields, orchards, and small hamlets, with panoramic views of the mountains unfolding in the distance.

Arriving in the market town of Oberstaufen, you’ll find yourself in the heart of the Allgäu region. This spa and wellness town is known for its cheese production, and a visit to a local dairy offers a glimpse into traditional craftsmanship. Alternatively, wander through the town’s old centre and learn about its cultural heritage in one of the small museums.

The route today winds through lush valleys and past the shimmering Lake Alpsee, one of Bavaria’s most scenic lakes. Stop in Immenstadt, where the charming old town is home to historic houses and cafés. Visit the ‘Alter Hof’, once used as a residence for nobility, or admire the elegant ‘Villa Edelweiß’.

As you continue, you’ll pass several chapels and the tranquil Lake Grüntensee before reaching Nesselwang. Although today’s stage is shorter, it’s one of the most beautiful. The route leads towards Füssen and the turquoise waters of Lake Forggensee, framed by the peaks of the Allgäu Alps.

In Füssen, explore the medieval old town and visit the Hohes Schloss, home to the Bavarian State Art Collection. The nearby Saint Mang Monastery also offers fascinating insights into the town’s long history. As you continue to Schwangau, the scenery becomes even more magical — this is the land of fairy-tale castles. From afar, you’ll see the spires of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau rising dramatically against the mountains.

End the day with a leisurely dinner and, if time allows, a twilight walk near the castles for breathtaking views.

Today’s route leads you away from the castles through lush alpine meadows and charming villages. A highlight of the day is the Wieskirche, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most beautiful examples of Bavarian Rococo architecture.

Cycling through peaceful landscapes dotted with lakes and moorlands, you’ll arrive in Murnau on Lake Staffelsee. The lake, with its seven small islands, is a favourite spot for swimming or simply enjoying the scenery. Murnau itself has long been an inspiration for artists, including members of the “Blue Rider” art movement. Enjoy dinner at your hotel or a local tavern overlooking the lake.

Today’s ride takes you through unspoiled countryside, passing Lake Kochelsee and the monastery of Benediktbeuern, both surrounded by majestic alpine views. The route is relatively gentle, with time to stop and take in the serene beauty of the region.

Arriving in Bad Tölz, you’ll immediately notice the town’s colourful façades decorated with traditional frescoes known as Lüftlmalerei. The town grew prosperous thanks to its location along old trade routes, and its charming market street is full of history. Treat yourself to coffee and cake in one of the local cafés and explore the riverside promenade before resting for the night.

Leaving Bad Tölz, you pedal through rolling hills and tranquil farmland towards Lake Tegernsee, one of Bavaria’s most popular lakes. Stop in Gmund for a panoramic view of the lake or take a short boat trip if time allows.

Continue along the Bodensee–Königssee Cycle Path until you reach Lake Schliersee, surrounded by forested slopes and alpine peaks. It’s a peaceful spot to unwind after a rewarding day’s ride. Stroll along the lakeside or enjoy a refreshing swim before dinner.

Today’s route follows the shores of Lake Schliersee before climbing gently through orchards and meadows to Bad Feilnbach. Known for its mild climate and more than 30,000 fruit trees, this town is often called the “Bavarian Merano”.

Bad Feilnbach is also famous for its healing moor baths and spa traditions. Enjoy a leisurely evening exploring the pretty town centre, where colourful houses and flower-decked balconies create a warm Bavarian atmosphere.

Today’s route takes you through the scenic Kollerfilze peatlands before reaching the picturesque village of Neubeuern, once a centre of shipbuilding. From there, cycle towards Lake Chiemsee, also known as the “Bavarian Sea”.

At the lake, take a well-earned break to enjoy the view or hop on a boat trip to visit the islands of Herrenchiemsee and Frauenchiemsee. The grand Herrenchiemsee Palace, built by King Ludwig II, is a must-see highlight that mirrors the splendour of Versailles.

The landscape changes as you head towards the Bavarian Alps. The route passes through the Bergener Moos wetlands beneath Mount Hochfelln and continues via Bad Adelholzen, famous for its mineral springs.
