Leaving the bustle of Vienna behind, you cycle through the scenic spa region of Lower Austria. Vineyards, forested hills and charming villages accompany you on your way south. A highlight of the day is Baden, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its Roman thermal springs and elegant villas.

Continue to Wiener Neustadt, a town rich in medieval history. Built using the ransom money of England’s King Richard the Lionheart, it features a picturesque old town, impressive fortifications and the Gothic-style cathedral. Enjoy a relaxing evening in one of the town’s cosy restaurants and reflect on your first day in the saddle.

Today begins with a scenic train ride along the Semmering Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world’s first mountain railways. The journey itself is an attraction, offering panoramic views of viaducts, tunnels and alpine forests.

Once in Semmering, your cycling stage begins. Ride through tranquil valleys and lush Styrian landscapes towards Bruck an der Mur, known for its medieval charm and riverside beauty. Explore the main square, admire the old clock tower and enjoy a coffee along the Mur River. This stage is the perfect blend of cultural discovery and mountain scenery.

Today’s route follows the Mur Cycle Path, one of Austria’s most scenic cycling trails. You’ll trace the course of the Mur River through Styria, often called the “green heart of Austria.” The terrain gradually softens as you approach Graz, making for an enjoyable day’s ride.

Graz, the capital of Styria, is full of life and history. Visit the Schlossberg with its famous clock tower, wander the UNESCO-listed old town, and enjoy dinner at one of the many local restaurants offering Styrian specialities. Graz perfectly balances a relaxed southern vibe with old-world charm.

Leaving Graz, you cycle through the gentle hills and vineyards of southern Styria, one of Austria’s most famous wine regions. The route offers countless opportunities to stop at wine taverns (Buschenschanken) for tastings and regional snacks.

Crossing the border into Slovenia, you arrive in Maribor, the country’s second-largest city and a gem for wine lovers. Don’t miss the world’s oldest grapevine, the Stara trta, still producing fruit after more than 400 years. The riverside promenade, medieval towers and lively squares make Maribor an enchanting overnight stop.

Today’s ride winds through Slovenia’s Lower Styria region, another area celebrated for its excellent wines and picturesque hills. Cycle past tranquil farms, forests and charming villages where you can stop for a local meal or wine tasting.

Your destination is Celje, a city rich in medieval heritage, dominated by its hilltop castle offering stunning views of the Savinja Valley. Alternatively, you can stay in nearby Laško, a town famous for its hot springs and the renowned Laško brewery. Enjoy a well-deserved soak in the spa or sample the town’s traditional beer for a taste of Slovenian hospitality.

Today’s journey takes you deeper into the Slovenian countryside, where time seems to move more slowly. You’ll pass through green valleys, rustic villages and peaceful meadows. The route climbs gently to the Trojane Pass, rewarding you with panoramic views. Don’t forget to stop for the famous Trojane doughnuts – a local favourite!

Those who prefer a shorter ride can take a train between Hrastnik and Sava. Your final destination is Ljubljana, Slovenia’s charming capital. Explore the old town, walk across the famous Triple Bridge and enjoy dinner by the Ljubljanica River.

Leaving the city behind, today’s stage leads you into Slovenia’s striking karst landscape. The terrain is dotted with limestone caves, forests and meadows. Your destination is Postojna, home to the famous Postojna Cave system – a natural wonder stretching over 24 kilometres.

A visit to nearby Predjama Castle, dramatically built into a cliff face, is also highly recommended. This stage combines adventure, nature and fascinating history, making it one of the most memorable parts of the journey.

Your final day in the saddle brings you across the border into Italy. The landscape shifts as you approach the coast, with Mediterranean vegetation and sea breezes welcoming you. The descent towards Trieste offers magnificent views of the Adriatic Sea.

Trieste itself is a city of contrasts, blending Italian elegance with echoes of its Habsburg past. Enjoy a coffee at one of its grand cafés, stroll along the waterfront, and take in the vibrant atmosphere of this historic port city – a fitting finale to your journey.
