A Classic Ride Through Austria’s Scenic Heartland
Embark on one of Europe’s most iconic cycling journeys along the Danube Cycle Path, from the charming Bavarian town of Passau to the imperial elegance of Vienna. This route offers a seamless blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and culinary delights. Ride through picturesque river valleys, past vineyards and medieval towns, and discover Austria’s timeless landscapes at your own pace.
Whether it’s the majestic bend of the Danube at Schlögen, the abbey at Melk perched high above the river, or a well-earned melange in a Viennese café—this tour captures the best of the Danube in one unforgettable ride.
Highlights
Select the tour you are interested in to view the itinerary.
Begin your journey in the pretty baroque town of Schärding or nearby Passau, known as the “City of Three Rivers.” Wander the historic old towns, stroll along the Inn or Danube riverfront, and enjoy a relaxed Austrian welcome.
Overnight in Passau or Schärding
Follow the Danube downstream through peaceful river landscapes. Stop in Engelhartszell to visit Austria’s only Trappist monastery, and then continue through the Donauleiten Nature Reserve. The dramatic Schlögener Loop—a 180° bend in the river carved into granite cliffs—is a natural highlight. Cross the river by ferry and settle in for the night.
Overnight near the Schlögener Schlinge
Ride through the fertile Eferdinger Basin, passing quiet villages like Aschach and Ottensheim. Arrive in Linz, Upper Austria’s capital, with its riverside culture, vibrant café scene, and contemporary art museums.
Detour slightly inland to visit the monastery at St. Florian or the historic town of Enns, Austria’s oldest city. Return to the Danube and follow it to Grein, a baroque gem with Austria’s oldest working theatre and the stately Greinburg Castle.
Cycle through the scenic Strudengau and Nibelungengau regions, once feared by sailors and now a peaceful stretch of river valley. Pass through villages like Ybbs and Marbach before reaching the gateway to the Wachau Valley.
Take time to visit the Benedictine Abbey of Melk before continuing into the Wachau—a region of vineyards, apricot orchards, and riverside castles. Cycle through wine villages like Spitz and Dürnstein, and enjoy a wine tasting along the way. End the day in Krems, Traismauer, or Tulln.
Distance travelled = 25-47 miles
Your final ride leads you toward Austria’s capital. Depending on your starting point and route, you may travel part of the way by train. Arrive in Vienna and toast your journey with a melange coffee and a slice of Sachertorte. Take in St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Ringstrasse, or enjoy a classic Fiaker carriage ride.
Distance travelled = 28-47 miles.
Stay on to explore more of Vienna or continue your travels elsewhere.
We recommend flying to Munich and returning from Vienna.
