Challenging
Challenging tours are built for fit, experienced cyclists who regularly ride long distances and are comfortable with significant elevation gain. Think club cyclists, sportive regulars, or anyone who actively trains and wants their holiday to match their drive. You should have a strong endurance base and ideally some experience of multi-day riding. These tours are not designed to break you — but they will require everything you've got on the big days, and that's precisely the point.
Daily distances range from 70 to 110+ kilometres, with substantial elevation gain — often 1,200 to 2,500 metres per stage depending on the route. You'll tackle real mountain climbs, technical descents, and full days of sustained effort. Despite the challenge, full logistical support is built in throughout: luggage transfer between accommodation, a dedicated support vehicle, and a carefully planned itinerary so you can focus entirely on riding. Hard days are balanced with exceptional places to stay and recover.
If you're regularly completing rides of 80km or more with significant climbing, and are comfortable on the bike for six to seven hours, you're likely well-suited. If in doubt, get in touch and we'll help you assess whether it's the right match.
A road bike is strongly recommended for challenging tours. Gearing matters — compact chainsets or wider cassettes will make a real difference on long climbs. We recommend having your bike professionally fitted before you travel.
Yes. All challenging tours include a dedicated support vehicle that carries luggage, provides mechanical assistance, and is available throughout each day if you need it.
Absolutely. Many of our riders join solo and find that the shared challenge of a tough route is one of the best ways to meet like-minded cyclists. You won't be short of conversation on the climbs.
