Bavaria’s Romantic Road is one of Germany’s most celebrated touring routes, and this 8-day loop traces its southern stretch by bicycle. Starting in the historic Fugger city of Augsburg, you pedal through meadows and traditional villages, past glittering lakes, and to the fairy-tale castle town of Füssen, before looping back through the foothills and the charming town of Murnau.
The highlight for most cyclists is Füssen, where King Ludwig II’s two fairy-tale castles, Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein, the inspiration for Disney’s Sleeping Beauty, are simply unmissable. En route, the Wieskirche, a masterpiece of Bavarian Rococo and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is another magical stop. Lake Ammersee, the Riegsee, Lake Forggen and Lake Lech all add to the watery charm.
Daily stages range from 23 to 39 miles on a predominantly challenging route with some notable climbs at the start of the tour. The routes are mostly paved with longer gravel sections. Accommodation is in 3-star hotels throughout.
Augsburg enchants with its historic old town, layered with the legacy of the Fugger merchant family — one of the most powerful banking dynasties in European history. Impressive Renaissance buildings, richly decorated churches, and the Fuggerei — the world’s oldest social housing complex, still inhabited today — are all within easy walking distance.

The first stage leads south over lush meadows and through traditional Bavarian villages towards Lake Ammersee, where sunny lakeside terraces and shaded beer gardens invite a pause. Your destination is the idyllic Lake Wörth, whose shores are perfect for an evening swim.

You cycle along Lake Wörth and Lake Pilsen past Andechs Abbey, whose Benedictine monks have brewed beer since the 15th century. Don’t miss the swimming spots at Lake Ammersee, Lake Riegsee and Lake Staffel along the way. Murnau, your overnight town, is associated with the Blue Rider expressionist art movement and has a charming old town.

Beautiful pastures and alpine charm accompany you on the route to Füssen. Along the way, the Wieskirche — a masterpiece of Bavarian Rococo and UNESCO World Heritage Site — is an unmissable detour. In Füssen and Schwangau, the fairy-tale castles of King Ludwig II await: Hohenschwangau and the iconic Neuschwanstein, the inspiration for Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle, are absolute must-sees.

Leaving Füssen along the Lech Cycle Path, you pass the shimmering blue waters of Lake Forggensee. A rest stop at Lake Lech gives beautiful views of the mountains behind you. The route follows the Via Claudia Augusta, the ancient Roman trade road, north to Schongau, a former Bavarian border fortress.

A shorter stage offering time to explore Schongau’s well-preserved medieval city walls and their wonderful views over the Lech valley. The route continues north along the Via Claudia Augusta past Romanesque churches, Roman remains and baroque pilgrimage churches to the historic town of Landsberg am Lech.

The final stage follows the best-preserved section of the Via Claudia Augusta through Kaufering and Königsbrunn, with the ducal city of Friedberg providing a final highlight before Augsburg comes back into view. The Fuggerei — dating from 1516 — and the city’s layered architectural history make for a fitting end to a richly varied tour.

Getting to Augsburg
By plane: Munich Airport (MUC) is the most convenient option, around 1 hour 30 minutes from Augsburg by direct train. Direct trains run frequently from Munich Hauptbahnhof, which connects to the airport by S-Bahn in 40 minutes. From the UK, Munich has excellent flight connections on Lufthansa, British Airways and easyJet.
By train: Take the Eurostar from London St Pancras to Brussels or Paris, then a high-speed ICE connection to Augsburg. Journey time from London is around 7–8 hours. Augsburg is on the main Munich–Stuttgart rail corridor and has frequent connections.
Getting home from Augsburg
This is a loop tour returning to Augsburg, so outbound and return travel use the same connections. Munich Airport remains the most practical option for UK flights.
