Overview
Beaujolais is best known for its wine, but cycling reveals a quieter and more varied side to the region. This short journey leads you north from Lyon through rolling vineyard landscapes, medieval villages and the warm limestone hills known as the Terre des Pierres Dorées.
Often compared to Tuscany for its scenery, Beaujolais combines gentle valleys with short climbs, wide views and a strong sense of place. You stay in small towns surrounded by vines, enjoy welcoming local hospitality and finish the journey in Mâcon on the banks of the Saône.
This tour is ideal for cyclists looking for a compact itinerary with character, culture and excellent food and wine.
Arrive in Lyon during the afternoon and transfer by taxi to your hotel near Anse, at the southern edge of Beaujolais. You’ll receive your welcome briefing, bikes if booked, and full route information. Settle in and enjoy your first evening among the vines.
Example hotel: Hôtel Saint Romain, Anse
Begin cycling through the Terre des Pierres Dorées, where villages are built from warm golden limestone. The route climbs steadily through rolling hills and quiet valleys, passing timeless villages and open countryside. A highlight is Oingt, listed among the most beautiful villages in France, with sweeping views from its medieval tower. Overnight in Vaux en Beaujolais.
Leave the hilltop village of Vaux en Beaujolais and ride north through vineyards classified under Beaujolais Villages appellations. The landscape opens out as you approach Romanèche Thorins. In the afternoon, enjoy a visit and wine tasting at Hameau Duboeuf, an engaging introduction to the region’s wine culture. Overnight in Romanèche Thorins.
Example hotel: Les Maritonnes, Romanèche Thorins
Ride through classic Beaujolais valleys and some of the region’s most recognised appellations including Moulin à Vent, Chénas, Fleurie, Juliénas and Saint Amour. Near the end of the route you pass close to the Rock of Solutré, rising dramatically above the vineyards. Continue to Mâcon where the Saône marks the northern edge of Beaujolais.
Your tour ends after breakfast. Mâcon train station is close by, with regular services to Lyon and access to high speed TGV connections.
We recommend flying to Lyon and returning from Lyon, or train from Macon.
