This route earns its name by taking in both sides of the Rhine: the German countryside around Freiburg first, then Alsace's own Wine Route and the fortress town of Neuf-Brisach on the way back. It's a considered way to see how two cultures have shaped one stretch of border country.
Strasbourg bookends the week, and we recommend you put some time aside to explore this stunning historic city before the start or after the end of your tour.
Highlights
Arrive in Strasbourg and settle into your hotel, with time to explore the Gothic cathedral and the UNESCO-listed old town.
Cross the Jardin des Deux Rives to Kehl and ride a flat stage along the German side of the Rhine through riverside forest villages.
Pleasant paths lead through Riegel and Emmendingen to Freiburg, capital of the Breisgau, with sunset views from the Schlossberg.
Follow the Breisgau-Radweg to Breisach, cross into France to visit the Vauban fortress of Neuf-Brisach, then reach Colmar and its Unterlinden Museum.
A short but scenic ride through the Grand Cru vineyards, via Eguisheim, Turckheim and Kaysersberg to Riquewihr.
Continue along the Wine Route past Hunawihr, Ribeauvillé and Bergheim before staying in Andlau, Barr or Obernai.
Visit the Romanesque church at Rosheim before joining the Bruche canal path back into the heart of Strasbourg.
Departure, or extend your stay in Strasbourg.
We recommend flying to Strasbourg and returning from Strasbourg.
